For her usual fans, which include the likes of Natalia Vodianova, Olivia Palermo, and Kim Kardashian among others, Natalia Alaverdian of A.W.A.K.E. stands for oversized dressing in Japanese-style silhouettes and cuts. But for resort 2019, this Belgian designer took a slightly different route with her collection. In place of her usual big shapes and freeform ideas, her clothes are more fitted and well-tailored to the body this season than ever before. The quirkiness and Japanese influences were all still there, particularly the bubblegum-pink “Samurai Barbie” coat that’s all quilted and geometric. A dark forest-green ensemble consisting of a low-cut skin-tight sweater and matching fit-to-flare trousers exemplifies this new change the most. Draping was also on full display this season, with the semi-deconstructed tops and the elegant ruched cocktail looks. It seems that whatever Ms. Alaverdian does, she’s able to instill her own signature quirk, and this ain’t no small feat for any designer!
