Talk about a comeback! After a much-polarized and mix reviewed debut in womenswear, Hedi Slimane‘s second collection for Celine was a triumph in showcasing what the company used to and should stand for in the current sphere of fashion: Parisian bourgeois style. In his Fall 2019 collection for the brand, gone were the sparkling mini-dresses and intensely tight suiting for waifs that aren’t necessarily the market of the label. Here, there were easy pieces—recognizable yet modified for modern tastes—that captured the elegance and ease of chic French style. A slightly billowing check skirt, a pair of just-right skinny denim jeans, a perfectly cut leather jacket, some aviator shades, and more. These were pieces that are signature Celine, all with the simplicity and versatility that many women, French or not, would love to have in their wardrobes. In his effort to venture beyond the shadow Phoebe Philo cast before his tenure, Slimane went straight to the house’s archives and touched upon the classics that made Celine the French fashion institution it is today. Come fall, many women would be sporting Celine again!
