If there’s a designer that’s always been into tailoring, it’s Thom Browne. Be it his men’s or women’s collections, one will always see his own signature brand of strict tailoring in his fantastical runway shows. And yet, for his Fall 2019 show in Paris Men’s Fashion Week, he turned his own label’s concept upside down and inside-out! Instead of his usual parade of business-ready suits that had a certain quirk to them, what he presented this season was a whole lot of womenswear for men! Trompe l’oeil dresses, corsetry, and deconstructed draping were on full force at this presentation, with only a handful of looks featuring trousers and shorts. “I love the idea of guys wearing dresses. I think it’s an interesting time, that guys are really open to so much more right now.” shared Browne post-show. Although his signature tailoring was still present, they were cut up into collage gowns and corseted frocks which, while feminine in nature, still looked bewilderingly masculine. Such is the quirkiness of Thom Browne’s genius mind, and if there’s one designer out there who can turn a concept on its head and still deliver a successful show, it’s him!
