Monique Lhuillier becomes the latest designer to get bitten by the 80s bug for Fall 2019. Taking inspiration from such style icons like supermodel Jerry Hall and legendary actress Joan Collins, this season as all about the excess and exuberance that has made the 1980s a continuing influence for fashion today. Here, there’s an overload of sparkles and volumes, packing in as much crinoline and sequins a ready-to-wear collection can take. The first look alone—a sparkling black tulle ball gown with a sequined bodice and a tulle floral-like feature by the asymmetric neckline—was very much in line with the glamour of the referenced decade. A few sleek draped numbers harken back to Joan Collin’s electric and show-stopping wardrobe as Dynasty villain Alexis Carrington, showing off the sensual power of a well-dressed woman. Although there isn’t anything revolutionary in this offering, it does touch upon women’s desires for unabashed glamour and strong beauty.
