Youth and elegance rarely mix nowadays, but that’s all about to change if designer Jonny Johansson has anything to say about it. His stunning show at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris for Acne Studios’ Fall 2019 collection was a look into old-school sophistication through the eyes of the youth. And what does this sort of elegance look like? Interesting proportions and fascinating styling choices. While this isn’t the first time Johansson has taken on the ladylike approach, this is, however, quite new from what most have seen from him. Firstly, the shapes are rounder and are a tad oversized—signature features of today’s streetwear phenomena—which were most evident with the tailoring. In his interpretation of the women’s power-suit, the shoulders are less sharp and the trousers are a bit slouchier than normal. At times, they’re even squished inside the socks to a evoke another sense of roundness within the look. More of the old-school sophistication came in the dresses. The prints came in damask floral dresses in streamlined silhouettes but were made to look younger by having them in neon colors and in an acid washed-like finish. They provided a visual element that’s slightly disturbing but all the more alluring. There’s no telling how well these looks will be received by the youth, but one thing is certian—the Acne Studios woman has grown up!
