We get it, Joie is for the California girl who prances about in prairie dresses and is sometimes a bit of a tomboy who wears leather jackets. But even she needs more interesting pieces every once and a while. What Sarah Ruston offered her customers this season were so incredibly pedestrian, it’s almost appalling. If you take a look at her Fall 2019 collection and then see pieces on display at any department store, you’ll find little to no difference at all! Granted, those gold metallic cocktail dresses look interesting, the other items are just so bland and boring! Simplicity does not mean mediocrity. A designer can still offer a simplistic line without having to trot out elevated basics and overused tropes. The sooner Ms. Ruston recognizes this, the better!
