Alexandre Vauthier has his own definition of glamour and he’s not afraid to reinforce it season after season. And should he? The likes of Beyonce and Celine Dion crave for such unabashed fabulousness and have become his faithful clients! But such divas are superstars who are often in need of opulent glamour both on and off the stage. What about the everyday woman? What is she to wear from this couture label? For Fall 2019, the designer conjured up an intrinsically French wardrobe that led to mixed results. On one hand, his indelible Parisian touch cannot be denied, particularly with the sharp tailoring that’s obviously an extension of his already beloved couture collections. Yet at the same time, there’s no newness to this line. Vauthier is among the younger designers in the exclusive official club of haute couture. He should one of, if not the leading voice in moving what’s already an outdated market for many in the fashion industry into the future. Instead, he tends to focus on reviving the 80s with exaggerated frills, hints of tuxedo-ed androgyny, and a tinge of animal prints. It’s all been done before, and while still beautiful, doesn’t’ necessarily add to the current conversations in fashion. The sooner Vauthier realizes this, the better.
