Italian maestro Giorgio Armani is a masterful tailor, but who knew he could play with color as well? It was only one color—blue, to be exact—but it’s how he expanded it into over a hundred elegant looks that proved his legendary eye for design. And so his Fall 2019 Menswear show commenced, quite fittingly entitled “Rhapsody in Blue.” It wasn’t just that an entire gentleman and woman’s wardrobes were painted with different tones and shades of one color, it’s that the languid flow of a variety of styles, and the cohesion that brought them all together, was quite astonishing. In an age when vintage maximalism and streetwear are out to take down the status quo of the fashion industry, Armani and his famous house stand as protectors of such traditions, even when they dip their toes into current trends. See the velvet hoodie in midnight blue—youthful in its modern ease but classic in its fine shimmering finish. A leather suit had all the sexual subversiveness that most designers were going for this season. As for the women’s, sparkling semi-sheer tops provided an edgy touch to their elegant evening-wear. Though this was far from the social media-savvy-type show that’s all the rage this year, this was, however, a classic and contemporary effort from one of the greatest designers still working today.
