Dior Men’s Fall 2019 Collection was the height of luxury during Paris Men’s Fashion Week. Creative director Kim Jones set the scene on what a modern couture presentation looks like, combining old-school glamour and classic sophistication with the more contemporary sense of androgyny and the renewed focus on tailoring. Instead of strutting down the runway, the models stood still, almost statue-like in their potential energy, as the conveyor belt presented their unbelievably luxurious looks to the amazement of the fashion crowd. Here, Jones brought forth a new and modern sensuality within the Dior vocabulary of precise tailoring and haute couture strictness. Not to mention the exuberance of embellishment. Sashes were draped across the male body in an almost subtle flamboyancy, evoking a distinguished sense of elegance akin to what royalty and nobility wear on formal occasions. The mix of the fine matte wools with the shimmering silks, in a somber palette of pastels no less, highlighted the house’s devotion to both extraordinary craft and quality textiles. And what of glamour? That was presented by way of animal prints—from zebra to tigers—as well as embellishments forming what looked like images of French culture. It’s safe to say that the woman emblazoned on a cashmere sweater might be the Mona Lisa herself. In the few seasons that Jones has taken on the reigns of this house, this is arguably his best collection yet. Here’s to hoping he can top it in the future!
