There’s a kid in every designer and lucky for the streetwear crowd, Ryohei Kawanishi is still very much in touch with his. His aesthetic for Landlord has always ventured into juvenile territories but for his Fall 2019 Menswear show, he grew up just a little bit. Trading in the short shorts and block colors, his latest seasonal line was all about a child’s journey in education and what he dresses for its various stages. Slightly deconstructed denim overalls (worn with hot pink leggings, no less) were what a kindergartener would wear every day while high school kids are more into color-blocked anoraks and parkas. A college student would definitely love the wool letterman jackets that looked cool and comfortable for a study session. Although he still stayed within his child-like narratives, there was a considerable effort on Kawanishi’s part to mature things up a bit. And that, ultimately, is what might make this collection a better retail success than his previous offerings!
