In his decade-long career, Bibhu Mohapatra has been a trusty designer for classic cocktail frocks and elegant ballgowns. And while we admire designers who stick to their guns, we’d expect a little something different every once and a while. Especially if they’re celebrating their 10th-anniversary. But alas, it was more of the same from Mr. Mohapatra in his Fall 2019 show. Some were as beautiful as ever—sparkling sequined dresses, shapely satin gowns, and the like. Though a lot of the bubbly silhouettes bore rather awkward-looking proportions and the feathers seemed a bit too gimmicky for our tastes, everything else was just fine. But was that really enough? Just fine? For a decade-long anniversary show, we were expecting a big bang! Furthermore, we wanted new ideas, not those that look regurgitated from other designers! But, in the spirit of celebrating 10 years in the industry, we’ll cut him some slack—this time! Hopefully, next season onwards, we will see a new designer with fresh exciting ideas!
