Zac Posen was looking at British preppiness as the starting point of his latest collection for Brooks Brothers. With plenty of tartans and some touches of plaid, the brand’s Fall 2019 line was all about the spirit of elegant British society crafted into a wardrobe for the urban sophisticate. There’s usually a lot of pomp and circumstance when it comes to British bourgeoisie dressing, but here, they were stripped away came to their most essential aesthetics. A beautiful dark cherry and deep green plaid jacket, which would be a pattern frequently on rigidly-tailored blazers and worn over or with a men’s suit, was simply paired with a black t-shirt and slim-cut trousers. A burgundy tweed suit was so softly constructed that they’d look great even when one is just lounging about in the city. Though simplicity was a huge factor in the overall designs of these clothes, it also relegated them a bit. Simple is always better, especially if such looks were borderline boring. Many of these clothes look like they’d be perfect for a librarians wardrobe, and unless this was the look Posen was going for, it’s safe to say that he missed the mark this season, albeit just a little bit. In this day and age, there should be no settling for ‘nice,’ but that is what these clothes are: just nice.
