Who knew that ‘grunge’ can look so sophisticated? That underground style that Marc Jacobs initiated back in the 90s was the height of youth culture but for Fall 2019, designer Simon Holloway reinterpreted it in a more refined way for Agnona. Firstly, he traded in the label’s rigid tailoring into softer and slouchier construction, incorporating the ease of grungy style even on the suits and monochromatic sets of separates. The oversizing of outerwear further pushed the look’s cozy aesthetic, but instead of look homeless, these looked homely. Of course, it wouldn’t be grunge without a layered mix of prints and textiles. It started with an ecru set of a shirt and jacket layered over a sheer chiffon embellished slip—an elegant approach to the sexy side of grunge. Then came the plaid, in either trucker shirt styles, midi-length draped skirts, and a full shearling coat. They were as grunge as Holloway can get, but all were still unmistakably sophisticated. It seems that however a designer spins it, one can never take the refinement out of this distinguished Milanese brand!
