“She’s a lady, but she’s not ladylike. She’s proper, but she’s not prim.” said the press release at Victoria Beckham’s Fall 2019 show. Those two sentences perfectly encapsulated the collection as a whole—which promoted a woman’s femininity and combining it with her strength. The show began with a midi-length white checked skirt-suit with a bright vermillion blouse and scarf. The color was so electrifying that she used it throughout most of the show, while the suit was cut to perfection. There was a floatiness to the line that was both refreshing and scintillating—as if Victora Beckham gave women their sublime freedom and agency. Yet, as the press release pointed out, these looks are far from ladylike. Take, for instance, a brownish houndstooth skirt-suit with a swiveling overcoat paired with cobalt blue knee-high boots. The electric pop of color gave what would have been too classic a look a modern and rougher edge. Most of her silhouettes centered on the 40s and 70s shapes—two decades when women were at the top of their games. This season, Beckham also focused on a technique that has long been one of her aces: draping. With shimmering silks, she molded business-ready frocks and cocktail dresses that were sophisticated but also incredibly smart. For fall, the Victoria Beckham woman isn’t sacrificing her femininity for anything, and the designer herself wouldn’t have it any other way!
