Emilia Wickstead is a huge fan of film, “The Godfather III,” and chose Mary Corleone, the doomed daughter of the ‘Godfather,’ as her latest muse. In her Fall 2019 show, she put out a slightly somber yet colorful wardrobe that touches upon the romance of the past with the strength and vitality of the present. The first look, a chocolate brown jumpsuit worn with leather gloves, evoked the strength of a modern woman today with the feminine flair of the grandmother who raised her. That strength was further highlighted with the hints of leopard print by way of a streamlined coat and a wafty dress. Despite the vintage film reference, however, this offering remained contemporary in essence. From the vibrant colors used to the contemporary silhouettes—a wedding ensemble, for instance, consisted of a long-sleeved bare-midriff cropped top paired with a high-waisted ball skirt. Young women today are unlikely to recognize the film reference, but they’re sure to capture the spirit of the muse and her effervescent modernity come fall!
