The trendiest hybrid designers are working on nowadays is the convergence of sportswear and high fashion. It can be through retail collaborations, such as the likes of Stella McCartney x Adidas, or with by incorporating haute couture traditions into one’s athletic ready-to-wear line. The latter was recently done by Ben Taverniti of Unravel. His spring 2019 womenswear collection had an elegant ladylike twist to deconstructed sportswear pieces. The nylon coat that opened the show, for example, which glimmered under the sunlight, had a tied-nipped waist akin to the shapes of Dior in the 1950s. A stark white double-breasted jacket, which was tailored to perfection, was paired with billowing wide leg warmers worn with matching sneakers. This is the look of 2019, one that combines the austerity of the past, the excitement of the present, and the hopes of a more relaxed vibe for the future. None did it as well as Unravel and things are looking up for this young self-made designer brand.
