Despite the rise of streetwear within the high fashion sphere, glamour is in safe hands thanks to Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino. His spring 2019 womenswear proved that there’s still room for old-school sophisticated and classic elegance in this youth-obsessed industry and the millennial-driven world. The first look, that of legendary white-haired runway veteran Kristen McMenamy in a balloon-like billowing off the shoulder dress with, signaled the entire fashion world that this was no ordinary fashion moment. It was one where elegance finally took center stage against a barrage of overbearingly erotic streetwear looks and overly-used oversized sportswear styles. The parade of midnight black looks harkened back to the old Valentino Garavani days of sophisticated cocktail dresses and champagne-filled evening looks. Granted there were still a few street-friendly pieces in this collection, they still looked more refined than what other labels have offered this season. Color and youth came in the various florals that wafted onto the runway, as well as the signature Valentino Red that came in the form of feminine day dresses. Ironically, it was mildly operatic offering despite a lot of daywear, but such is the genius that is Pierpaolo Piccoli for Valentino.
