When one thinks of Molly Goddard, frothy tulle dresses and pouf silhouettes perfect for evening galas and 80s-inspired parties are what usually come to mind. But during her Spring 2019 show, she offered an alternative look to still evoke her signature youthful and romantic feminine sensibility. This season, for the first time in her already stellar career, she’s injected some separates for daywear. The narrative goes that a young woman is about to go to a party but she’s stopped by her mother, who asks her to go on a quick trip to the market. And what does one wear to such an occasion? Goddard proposes leg-baring short shorts paired with lace-trimmed overcoats, as well as skirt-suits and shirt-dresses hemmed with ruffles. The thrill of the frills are still all there, but the pieces are ready to be worn for daily activities. It’s a sign that Goddard is ready to expand to new horizons in fashion, and what a delight it is to see that despite venturing into new territories, she’s still taking her girlish and romantic take with her.
