For Fall 2019, Marissa Webb just presented a masterclass on how to design an 80s-influenced collection for the cool girl, all without looking too referential and obnoxious. Sure, we saw a lot of past styles that other designers have taken or are taking on in recent seasons, but here they were cut up and twisted to look undeniably contemporary. The high-waisted denim jeans, for instance, didn’t look like your mother’s old pair that might still be in the attic. Here, they were endlessly flattering and so nonchalant. Tailored menswear-esque suits and outerwear provided a toughness that was also cool, but didn’t take away from the line’s ultimate femininity. For those who prefer daintier varieties, frilly dresses in floral and python prints combined the edginess of modern women with the elegance of the past—though we could have done without the ugly florals. All in all, this was an effortless collection that resonated with our inner cool girls. Come fall, a lot of them will be wearing these items on the street and posting about them on their Instagrams. We guarantee it!
