It’s one thing to be glamorous during these troubling times, it a different matter entirely when you’re too ostentatious. Unfortunately, the latter is the case for Marchesa’s Fall 2019 collection. Yes, they’re beautiful fairytale-like frocks that tickle any ladylike fancies you might have, but they’re also unnecessarily exuberant. We feel that in a time when modern feminism is pushed to the forefront, frothy gowns that almost drown women in their miles of ruffles and tulle are not the best ways to go. It’s all about editing them down a bit. There’s still a market for such glamorous gowns, but having them lighter so that women can actually have free agency when wearing them might be a better idea. Fortunately, there were some daywear pieces here that women outside Hollywood and high society can still invest in. The black-and-white pants look with a neck-tie was refreshing, while the fit-to-flare baroque embroidered button-up dress was simply exquisite. But then again, they too were drowned out by the show-stopping heavily-embroidered gowns. At this point in time, Marchesa seriously needs to find the right balance between their fantastical evening elegance with the current clamor for more navigable and practical occasion-wear. If not, they risk fading into irrelevance.
