Deconstruction has become John Galliano‘s ultimate strength in Maison Martin Margiela, which he continues to exemplify at his Artisanal shows. The very latest, his Spring 2019 Haute Couture collection for the brand, takes to mind the concept of excess and how it can be twisted and turned around to reveal something new and fresh. Backed by a puzzling graffiti background and a mirror-plated runway, every look challenged the eye to see what used to be traditional and classic, but are now deconstructed to new garments that are unique and slightly unorthodox. A trenchcoat, Galliano’s’ favorite garment to play with, was turned into shorts while another was draped to become a one-layer cocktail dress. And yet, despite such disruptions, the tailoring here is just as top-notch as it is in other couture houses of the same caliber. What was John Galliano trying to prove here, exactly? Maybe the fact that haute couture, with all its solid traditions, craft, and excess, will forever be relevant, even for the generations to come.
