When it comes to extravagance, the Ancient civilization of China is almost always forgotten. But as what “Crazy Rich Asians” has recently proven, East Asians have a thing for luxury and ostentatious finery. This sort of extravagance was what Guo Pei wanted to convey on her Spring 2019 Haute Couture show. Inspired by the culture of the Palace of the East, where women in different roles wore different yet similarly-elaborate costumes, she put forth a magnificent display of other-worldly Chinese elegance. Each piece was hand-embroidered to create stunning Chinese imagery and a gilded sense of elegance more attuned to tastes of the East. Fabrics were also draped and cut in flattering proportions, particularly a shimmering silver lame evening gown that will surely be a highlight on any red carpet. The modern interpretation of Ancient Chinese culture was astounding, and for it to be celebrated in Paris during haute couture week is a good sign that the once European-dominated industry is finally letting in talents from different parts of the world.
