Alberta Ferretti has been experimenting with younger aesthetics in recent seasons lately, which makes perfect sense for her ready-to-wear lines, but was a complete and utter surprise when she applied it to her limited edition haute couture sub-label as well. Her haute couture and eveningwear, in general, were always traditionally classic and sophisticated. She’s mastered the art of the flou, which in haute couture means diaphanous dresses and huge ball gowns. But for her Spring 2019 Haute Couture collection, Ferretti seeks to allure a younger crowd with her structured cocktail dresses and sharply-cut evening gowns. Stand-out looks included a shimmering ocean teal satin mini-dress with elongated and structured butterfly sleeves and the rock-stud and sequined section of cocktail dresses and pantsuits. There was a rock-and-roll element that was new for Ferretti but was quintessentially Italian, more in the veins of Cavalli and Versace. Will these looks bide well with her couture clientele? Only time can tell.
