Every woman wants a bit of fantasy in their fashions, and for Fall 2019, Jonathan Simkhai delivered in such a profound yet subtle way. His latest collection was, in many ways, a tribute to his mother and their family’s Ukrainian roots but the results were vastly beautiful and can be appreciated even beyond the country. Though the show could have fared better without the cheap-looking pink satin slips that opened the show, the moment that first scarf-printed frock (in burgundy) walked by, we knew this would be an indelibly beautiful collection, And it certainly was! Simkhai added further dimensions to his billowy ethnic references by pairing them with more tailored and structured pieces, be it a well-cut trench (more or less in the same hues) or with a work-ready pantsuit. At times he also matched them with puffer jackets but we thought they could have just edited them out and it still would have been a lovely collection. Arguably, for us, the best pieces were the pajama-like ensembles, silky and sleek in their own exotic and elegant ways. A stunning navy blue iteration with white polka-dots was even worn by a plus-sized woman who effortlessly highlighted the beauty of body diversity. There were so many stellar things to unpack here that it won’t surprise us if Jonathan Simkhai will experience a surge in sales come fall!
