As one of the perpetrators of the streetwear trend, one would have never expected Virgil Abloh to succumb to the current glamorous and tailoring trend, but his Fall 2019 show was just that. Although peppered with sportswear references from racecar driving to premier league football, the collection was ultimately one of his most glamorous outings to date for his Off-White label. This season, his signature oversized pieces were shapelier, easier to cinch at the waist to evoke that old-school elegance of decades past. There was also a lot of tailoring involved, from the shimmering leather ensembles to the twisted and perverse takes on tuxedo dressing. There was even one that was just a cropped white sating tuxedo jacket worn with an equally-shimmering pair of short shorts—a classic Abloh-esque spin. And the end, the glamour went full throttle with red-carpet-worthy evening gowns paraded by supermodels Karlie Kloss and Gigi Hadid. So the question of whether streetwear still has a place in this glamour-centric tailored world, Abloh answered with a resounding yes!
