Lucie and Luke Mercier took a different approach when they took on minimalism for menswear. In their spring 2019 collection for Jil Sander, they touched upon the brand’s heritage of uniform-dressing and pragmatic pieces. The minimalism here was layered, both figuratively and literally, with various codes about uniformity, ranging from youthful school ensembles to stark military aesthetics. Yet, with all the simplicity of uniform dressing, these looks were far from looking monotone. Amidst the grays, blacks, and whites were splashes of color and print, thanks to a few stand-out pieces. One such is the elongated wool sweater with a splat of bright orange by the sleeve. Blue-checkered knitted pieces also added some colorful fashionable flair. While other designers took simpler routes in conveying true-blue minimalism, the Merciers went with a more intelligent take for their menswear—a signature of Jil Sander.
