It’s evident when a designer is trying to go for something he/she is not and the end-results are not as beautiful as imagined. This was the case for Christian Cowan in his Fall 2019 show. Cowan is a master showman in fashion. His designs pushed the boundaries in terms of scene-stealing glamour and subversive opulence. But this season, he tried to water down his own aesthetics into a more practical style that sorely missed the mark. With awkward incomplete-looking trains, exaggeratedly puffy feathered skirts, and metallic panels that looked like they were falling off the looks, this line was all over the place. There didn’t seem to be any complete nor original idea at all. It all appeared like random clothes plucked out from any department store, dyed in neon hues, and added some metallics, tulle, and feathers to make them more Cowan-esque. Not even the quality of the less extravagant items was noteworthy. Take out all the “avant-garde” elements and you’d have a collection that you wouldn’t even give a second look. We’re definitely disappointed with this offering this season!
