Beyond its iconic tragic romance, the 1970 film “Love Story” is one of those cult classics that helped define the style of a generation. So much so that designer Shawn Reddy took it as his own inspiration for his heavily 70s-influenced Fall 2019 collection for Derek Lam 10 Crosby. From Ryan O’Neal‘s preppy jock sweaters to Ali MacGraw‘s billowy hippie-esque frocks, the movie’s sartorial elements were reworked for a more modern millennial audience. The results were particularly captivating, in it that they ticked all the boxes of what people want nowadays. A touch of tailoring there, some floatiness here, and a whole lot of nostalgic preppiness for that tinge of classic luxury. Even the clash of prints—a huge trend nowadays—was subtler and more sophisticated here, as evidenced by the check pantsuit worn with a leopard-print top. Among the daintier lot, a chic off-white dress with a matching belt (and a huge buckle to boot) had that right touch of vintage without looking too retro. Come fall, these are the pieces to look forward to!
