Matthew Williams has always had a much more rigorous take on streetwear compared to other brands, and Alyx’s Fall 2019 collection stands testament to that. Quite decisively, he stayed within his own vocabulary of mixing oversized shapes with sleek silhouettes, promulgating a strict sense of tailoring within the more freeform landscape of streetwear. This season, however, there was evidently more and stricter tailoring than usual, setting forth an array of suits—both for men and women—that inhibited a sleek embrace on the body. His use of different and high-quality fabrications was what separated each look from each other. Graphics-wise, he turned to a pop of bloody red-orange and military camouflage to push in a more contemporary and urban edge that many of his faithful clientele will appreciate. Yet despite using these streetwear elements, there was still a sophistication in this offering that made it feel more mature than usual. Underground or not, these clothes look too good not be seen in any setting, be it on the street or in the boardroom!
