When most people talk about diversity in fashion, it’s mostly about race. But as what Rachel Comey’s Fall 2019 show proved during New York Fashion Week, it should center around age as well. No one can deny that fashion has always been a youth-centric industry, but there is beauty in forming a palette of different generations within one exquisite collection. In this way, Comey highlighted the versatility of her designs. The eye-catching first look of a neon orange shirt paired with a hot-pink paper bag-waisted skirt looks incredibly young, but it also fit the more mature model that wore it down the runway perfectly. In fact, arguably most of the show ventured into millennial streetwear territory, from the oversized shapes, relaxed tailoring, to the vivid hues that colored most of the pieces. Yet the runway wasn’t all young. Models of different ages proudly sported the looks, confidently showing off their abilities to project their own vivaciousness onto their contemporary outfits. And everything looked just perfect!
