There’s something so powerful and fearless about a well-cut coat, which is slightly ironic as the garment is made to protect one from external forces. But on Max Mara’s Fall 2019 runway, it was all about the power-coat in all its glory. Tailored to perfection with broad shoulders and a slightly boxy silhouette, one by one the coats came strong in various iterations. Creative director Ian Griffiths opened the show with a trio of monochrome looks in eye-popping cerulean, azure, and mustard yellow. Fearless in both form and color, there was a confidence to them that was both empowering and a tad bit intimidating. For those who prefer the more classic kinds, a parade of neutrals, from the creamiest of ecrus to the richest of caramel shades, trotted forth with glamorous rigor. Each look was a sight to behold, particularly those in a fur and animal print. As the show went on, things got a little too dark, fetishistic even in the powerful pinstriped ensembles that further blurred the lines between femininity and masculinity. The shimmering leathers didn’t help, but rather accentuated the powerplay up a notch. If any woman wants to wear a coat to look powerful come fall, any of these stunning Max Mara pieces will do!
