Make no mistake, Margaret Howell’s collections aren’t just simple clothes to put on one’s back. There’s a refinement to them that’s unseen in many of her contemporaries, and she continues to rely on the cut, quality, and a hint of nostalgia for her retail success. At first glance, it’s easy to dismiss her looks as old-fashioned, at times frumpy, and just plain normal. But it’s the stark simplicity and versatility in her designs, as well as the undeniable quality that doubles the luxury factor, that makes them all the more desirable. In fact, there was even a youthful glow to many of her outfits for Fall 2019, from the ease of the tailoring to the gender-neutrality of the clothes themselves. There was no masculine or feminine in this offering, just well-made articles that can help one achieve his/her personal style. Not to mention the fabulous fabrications, from the shining velvets and strong suedes to the incredibly luscious cashmere items and useful nylons. All in all, this was luxury at its subtlest and finest!
