Newly-appointed design director Yuni Ahn is breathing new life into Maison Kitsune, by injecting her own simple yet refined style into the mix. An alumnus of Phoebe Philo’s Celine, there were traces of her signature minimal aesthetic in the brand’s Fall 2019 Collection—particularly the long silhouettes and the upgraded basics. Trousers were suddenly leaner, jackets were more fitting, and coats’ hems almost reached the floor. However, there were still bits of the label’s streetwear identity as well, such as the hoodies and baseball shirts. Paired with the tailored suit, this became the mix of high and low, uptown and downtown that will separate Ahn’s new Maison Kitsune from other labels seemingly going the Philo-esque minimalist route. That and her indelible sense of humor in putting a streetwear edge to a luxury label.
