The Comme des Garçons Shirt Fall 2019 Menswear show notes suggested that there was no theme to their latest fall line but as the looks appeared one after another, one can’t help but see a stark similarity with each and every one of them: a sense of innocence. What looked like the shape of a paper doll was patchworked into a button-down shirt that opened the show and a few similar looks in different hues and patterns followed suit. Succeeding them was an array of vibrantly colored outfits with comic book prints decorated on pieces that were quite painful to look at, but interesting nonetheless (albeit confusing). And by the end, a series of multi-material shirts with harnesses that suggested baby-carriers without actually having the accessories nor the infants with them. Although the label made it clear there was no theme, the show looked like an evolution of a man from child to father and the various garments that defined the different stages in his life. Although poignant and slightly pretty, there was little desirability to the overall impact of the clothes. Perhaps the patchwork baby shirts might sell, as will the half-cut incomplete business shirts in the middle, but who in their right minds would wear those tacky comic book-printed pieces? This would have been a better show without them!
