For Fall 2019, Rick Owens is continuing his tribute to late costume designer and stylist Larry LeGaspi with a parade of glam rock and dark sensuality. Here, not only did Owens touch upon LeGaspi’s works with countless musical icons —the likes of Kiss and Grace Jones—but also the tumultuous rise and impending tragedy that was his life. Throughout the array of sensual silhouettes and refined deconstruction, one can get a sense that, while these clothes are glamorous in both volume and construction, there was a melancholy behind them. Even the more colored section—hues of crimson, apricot, and tan—had a fluidity to them that felt sad yet still sophisticated. The leather bits, which peeped in through most of the ensembles, were nice edgy tinges to remind of the rock’n’roll attitude of both Owens’ signature aesthetic and the artist he’s referencing. Consequently, some other eye-catching looks were the hints of sportswear thrown into the mix, like the floor-length puffer coat and leather-paneled tracksuit pants. In terms of footwear, Owens took the more sustainable route by introducing vegan sneakers: kicks made out of vegetable-sourced materials. Overall, this was a stunning showing of romantic prowess with a harder edge that only Rick Owens knows how to combine with such harmonious ease.
