Many Swiss luxury watchmakers have diving collections with proven enduring appeal that even become icons in horology. For Omega, that is the Seamaster. Tag Heuer has the Aquaracer. Submariner is among the most in-demand watches for Rolex. Breitling, meanwhile, has the Superocean. The Superocean, which debuted in 1957, was especially made for divers who had to navigate deep, dark waters. In a market already saturated with choices, the Superocean was an additional but very competitive alternative to the aforementioned collections with its impressive visibility and water resistance capacity.

As one of Breitling’s most lauded collections, the Superocean is bound to be reintroduced every few years. Last year marked its 60th anniversary, which prompted Breitling to give fans what they want: the Breitling Aeromarine Superocean Heritage that can be seen as the meeting of the past and the present in a timepiece. As with all other iconic watches, elements that made the original Superocean immediately identifiable are still present in the 2017 edition. But it also symbolized the Swiss watchmaker’s stepping into the future by incorporating timely technological updates, the movement among them.

Pros
The Breitling Aeromarine Superocean Heritage is a watch that is beautiful even in the extremes of lighting conditions. Whether that may be under the glaring sun or the deepest of seas, one cannot help but admire the watch with its classic lines and vividly colored dial. As expected from a diving watch, time telling would not be a problem regardless of environment. The hands and indices reflect light without hurting the eyes, even giving the timepiece an elegant glow. Compared to alternatives, the Breitling Aeromarine Superocean Heritage at 42mm feels rather compact.
Cons
Although it sits comfortably and elegantly on the wrist, the Breitling Aeromarine Superocean Heritage is not a piece that you can just ignore. In terms of thickness, it is pegged at 14.35mm, but this complements the whole design of the watch.
