Balenciaga is a fashion house full of innovations. The label has seen its fair share of fashion revolutions, starting from its grand couturier founder to its current streetwise creative director. For the spring 2019 show, Demna Gvasalia paid tribute to both the brand’s haute couture codes as well as its tradition of innovating how people dress, resulting into what was some of the most sublime tailoring the label has seen in quite some time. Coats and jackets were cut into new silhouettes that may seem like the 1950s shapes of Cristobal but were entirely new and contemporary. A new form of the suit was also introduced—one that helps the house’s growing young demographic evoke a more refined style while still keeping their street credibility. In the few years under his leadership, Gvasalia has paved a new path for Balenciaga, and the house’s tradition of innovating fashion is poised to continue.
