Rave culture, punk, and the bourgeoisie are just some of what Britain has contributed to the fashion world. And on Burberry’s Fall 2019 show, creative director Riccardo Tisci chose to highlight them with rigor, precision, and a modern touch. He started the show with his usual streetwear antics—slighlty deconstructed pieces, oversized sportswear, and a humorous take on the label’s famous check. A stand-out look was that of an exaggeratedly oversized parka that looked like a sporty opera coat. Succeeding that was a more elegant yet sexually subversive section that ventured into both tailoring and corsetry. Make no mistake, however, as Tisci’s own idea of corsetry is more BDSM than what one would see in a Jane Austen adaptation film. There were provocative yet sensual and were the perfect transitory exits to lead up to the bourgeoisie part—the highlight of the collection as far as tailoring is concerned. With his haute couture skills from his tenure at Givenchy, each suit, dress, and coat was so beautifully constructed that one could already tell how expensive they’ll be. At the very least, however, with such an eclectic collection, all markets can have something to look forward to from Burberry come fall!
