To say that Pierpaolo Picciolo Spring 2019 Haute Couture show for the house of Valentino was the highlight of Couture Week is an understatement. Piccioli essentially delivered a classic couture show—a celebration of design and craft of the highest caliber. As per usual, there were many frills for thrills, but while for other labels, this may look gimmicky, his was natural, sincere, and breathtaking. It started with a few pants looks—options for the couture client who work for a living—painted with what has become his signature color-blocking of stark shades of vibrant hues. But as soon as the first floral cocktail dress wafted on, which was paired with matching tights, the show was finally in couture heaven. Looks upon looks of embroidered gowns, embellished dresses, big bows, glimmering lace, and billowy chiffons captivated the audience so much that even the legendary singer Celine Dion, who sat front row next to Valentino Garavani himself, was moved to tears. These were show-stopping creations that one would be absolutely privileged to wear for a formal event, yet at the same time, looked fitting on a museum display as well. Such is the majesty of haute couture, and for it to be given reverence by a creative genius like Pierpaolo Piccioli only goes to show that the fate of this craft is in good hands. No, great hands!
