What’s fashion without a little whimsy? Thom Browne knows how to put on a show that’s all about quirkiness and fantasy. His spring 2019 menswear show was just that and more! Inspired by a curious case of garden gnomes, he started the show with his signature gray wool romper (or “romphim” as some might call it) complete with a buttoned-up shirt, a tie, a beard, and a tall hat. If that wasn’t whimsical enough, then his other 59 looks should be able to convince anyone of Mr. Browne’s quirky imagination. They all started oversized, with his signature cartoonish touch on big and broad-shouldered overcoats and jackets in pastels, candy stripes, cutesy gingham, and other adorable prints. There was also no shortage of shorts here either, both above and below the knees, to allow men to feel the summer breeze. As the show progressed, the silhouettes became smaller and more fitted to the lanky male models that wore them. Such a fantastical show is a rarity in the industry nowadays, which should make everyone feel thankful that Thom Browne is still showing during Fashion Month.
