Thom Browne classic take on masculine womenswear was on full display at his Pre-Fall 2019 Collection. This season, he returns to his signature schoolboy approach, complete with references to structured uniforms, varsity jackets, and the like. However, despite the youthfulness of the concept, these clothes are certainly for the more refined and sophisticated women. The line exemplified Browne’s evolution into a couturier, with such precise tailoring and the most interesting of fabric manipulation. The former is showed in the signature grey outerwear which, while boxy as ever, defines a shapeliness to the women that’s more intimate and gives a softer silhouette than what his menswear would usually look like. The latter, on the other hand, is in the fabulous fraying in some of the monochrome suits—more in line with the quirkiness he’s been sending down the runway in recent seasons. Even though this is ready-to-wear, Browne incorporated a heavy haute couture touch that makes these looks all the more stunning and valuable.
