Description
Whether you agree with them or not, Nike has seemingly made their stance clear when it comes to the LGBT community with their Flyknit Racer “Be True” sneakers. Unafraid of the politics, this sportswear behemoth showed retail courage by doing something that might have longlasting consequences. Regarding the shoes, however, the overall design may not be enough to convince the community of the brand’s full support. These may just be baby steps, but at least it’s towards the right direction.

Nowadays, more and more fashion brands are becoming political. Whether it’s in their choice of marketing or incorporated within their new products, luxury labels are showing their clients and customers that they’re “woke.” A common political stance among several brands today is supporting the LGBT community—a community that has been instrumental in the establishment and success of the entire fashion industry. Among the brands who outwardly showcase their support is Nike, particularly with their Flyknit Racer “Be True” sneakers.

Release date: June 1, 2017

The new Flyknit Racer “Be True” sneakers are some of many products from the American sportswear retail giant that show their support for the LGBT community. The pair itself was released on June 1, 2017, and have since been a much-talked-about product from the brand, mostly because of the political messaging behind them. The shoes cost about $150 to $280 for each pair depending on where you are buying from – please check the Compared Prices on the left or below this post to get the cheapest pairs.

Pros

Nike’s Flyknit Racer “Be True” sneakers exemplify all that is loved about the classic silhouette. From the sleek fit to the primeknit upper, the shoes are true-blue premier Nike Flyknit. The pair also features some quirks, namely the rainbow-flag swoosh logo on the outer sides of the pair while a bright hot pink version decorates the inner sides. These bursts of colors give the right amount of splash amongst the Flyknit’s classic black-white-gray colorway. Additionally, the message of support is made even louder and clearer with the “Be True” slogan written on the tongue.

Cons

For a product that’s supposed to celebrate the LGBT community, Nike’s Flyknit Racer “Be True” sneakers are quite monotone in overall design impact. Such a cause calls for more color and vibrancy—design elements that the American sportswear brand, unfortunately, did not make much use of. The rainbow-hued and pink-colored swoosh logos are not enough to exponentially showcase one’s support for the LGBT community, and it makes the product seem more of a commercial tactic than a genuine political stance.
