Print, knit, and party frocks are usually what come to mind when speaking of Missoni, but for their spring 2019 show in Milan, their 65th-anniversary celebration, they put forth another strength that’s as equally iconic. That night, the runway was filled with countless fabric manipulations and faded coloring that all looked romantic and elegant, but fresh and new at the same time. Because of their overuse of graphic prints in recent years, many have forgotten that Missoni is a fashion house built on textile innovations. They can crumple, bleach, tick, pleat, patchwork, and do so much more with fabric, but their garments still end up looking expensive and feeling luxurious. Apart from a few beachy shades of pink and blue, the neutral color scheme worked well with all the manipulations, some of which looked more scientific than simply stylish. There was an intelligence behind it, locked away within the Missoni family who, to this day, still reign supreme in their own eponymous fashion empire.
