What was incredibly striking about Just Cavalli’s Pre-Fall 2019 collection was how grown-up the clothes look. Roberto Cavalli was the father of glam rock chic, defining a signature style of ostentatious and sexually-charged Italian glamour. And while there were hints of that on this latest offering by Paul Surridge, the image of a young sophisticate was more upfront. The fabrications, however, remained humble—a touch of denim here and a tinge of wool there. But instead of transforming them into casual pieces, they were tailored to become skirt-suits, outerwear, and a selection of other savvy separates. There was also a sporty element to it, something completely new and way beyond the usual vocabulary of the Cavalli brand. So what is Surridge’s message with all the newness at a sublime? It seems that there will be some changes afoot, and all the fashion world is in great anticipation.
