It’s difficult to see what direction John Richmond took his brand for Fall 2019. There was a whole lot of the 80s in that show, but at the same time had a contemporary nonchalant edge that didn’t really jell well with the references. What resulted was a confusing collection that even Vogue Runway didn’t have anything written about it on their site. It started well with a barrage of all black looks with hints of purple popping out—the color combination was delectable enough. But as the show progressed, and the tailoring got a lot slouchier, the sportswear started dominating the runway, and the women’s shoulders were bigger than ever, the show got a little out of hand. For one thing, the men and women’s looks were disconnected, with the former taking on an easier and more youthful vibe while the latter was all about the 80s with the exaggerated shoulders and dangerously high hems. And while the military section was a coming together of sorts, it wasn’t enough to convince anybody that this was a coherent collection. Let’s hope that Richmond’s next show will be (a lot) better than this!
