Before the streetwear craze happened, Jason Wu was at the top of his game as New York’s premier dressmaker for modern women. His red carpet repertoire included actresses Diane Kruger and Brie Larson, model Lily Aldridge, and most famously, former US First Lady Michelle Obama. In recent years, however, he significantly toned down his dressmaking in line with the streetwear sensibilities of tailoring, both for his eponymous lines and his work at Hugo Boss. But for spring 2019, Wu is back at it again with a series of both work-ready and evening-appropriate dresses. His signature subtle use of lace was a welcomed comeback surprise, both on a pinstripe wrap dress and his array of sexy chiffon creations. The appearance of sleek shifts were hallmarks of his growth in tailoring and clear remnants of his work at Hugo Boss. But it was the red carpet-worthy gowns that arguably stole the show, which were gentle reminders of this designer’s endearing legacy in fashion today.
