It’s not rare in the fashion retail industry that certain items represent certain places. In fact, it’s because of such that these pieces become more desirable. When one sees a Chanel suit, one can’t help but think of Paris. The Burberry Check almost always harkens back to London. And a dainty yet seductive lace dress a’la Dolce and Gabbana can only conjure up thoughts of Sicily. This type of phenomenon has been going on ever since the haute couture houses were established, but now, it has hit sneaker culture. Just one look at Nike’s new Air Jordan 1 “Igloo” and “Rust Pink” sneakers, one will only think of Miami.

Release date: December 7, 2017
Retail Price: $2,720 (Igloo) $2,500 (Rust Pink)

Inspired by the sunny and sexy city of Miami, where sneaker culture is integrated into the city’s social norms, the highly successful American sports brand released two versions of their iconic shoe on December 7, 2017. They debut them during Art Basel 2017, a famous art fair and show, held at the said city. At the time, the shoes debuted exclusively in Miami but have since been expanded to other locations through online retail platforms. As they are limited edition, they’re some of the most expensive sneakers ever released by Nike. The “Igloo” pair costs a whopping $2,720 while the Rust Pink iteration costs $2,500.

Pros

The Air Jordan 1 “Igloo” and “Rust Pink” got their names mainly through their colorway. The shades of icy sky blue and ice cream-like rust pink are so vivid and bright, especially since they’re juxtaposed from a stark black and white color scheme. With such a convergence of different colors and hues, the shoe reflects the artistic spirit in Miami, particularly the graffiti art that the city has continuously characterized with.

Cons

Since the shoes are a special and limited edition, they’re some of the most expensive shoes from the beloved American sportswear label. However, aside from their eponymous colors, there’s little to no interesting design feature on the said shoes. Unlike other Air Jordan sneakers that have featured varying fabrications, new silhouettes, and little details that are unique to their models, the “Igloo” and “Rust Pink” sneakers are simply Air Jordans with limited edition colorways. A lot have sneakerheads protest that such simple shoes do not necessarily deserve steep price points.
