By the time the MET’s 2019 exhibition, which is said to be all things ‘camp,’ opens with the ever buzzed-about Met Ball, some of Schiaparelli Spring 2019 haute couture looks are bound to appear, both on the red carpet and in the displays. The show this season was exceptionally campy, not in its negative connotation, but rather with the quirkiness and charm that the decades-old label was founded upon. For this collection, creative director Bertrand Guyon was inspired by Elsa Schiaparelli‘s love for flowers, which was so pure and innocent that the clothes on the runway evoked the same ideals. Florals upon floras were embroidered on shirt day suits, complete with pussycat bows, embellished on hourglass cocktail dresses, and sequined to mini-jumpsuits and evening gowns. The show looked like a little girl’s fantasy come to life, with each look harnessing a sense of glamour and childlike romanticism that are well within the very core of this brand. And for the finale, a pregnant Erin O’Connor appears in a frothy, layer upon layer, hot pink tulle confection of a gown. It was the perfect whimsical end to a perfectly charming show.
