To look forward into the future, one has to look back to the past. This is a principle that’s all too familiar in the fashion and luxury retail industry. Past fashions and styles are often referenced time and time again by today’s hottest brands, etching new facets into their legacies. Fortunately, today’s consumers have no objection of such as vintage-inspired items usually make for successful retail performances. Just take a look at Piaget’s “Vintage Inspiration” Black Tie timepiece.

Release date: January 2015
Price when reviewed: $32,100

During the renowned watch fair SIHH in January of 2015, Piaget released a collection of watches that harkened back the more elegant eras of their brand’s history. Part of this special line was the Black Tie “Vintage Inspiration” watch, which references the sophistication of the 1970’s. In fact, even art icon Andy Warhol favored this timepiece during the said decade. With only 28 pieces on offer, this limited edition watch is sold at $32,100 each.

Specifications:

  • Diameter: 45mm
  • Movement: Caliber Beta 21
  • Water Resistant: 100 meters
  • Power Reserve: 42 hours
  • Frequency: 21,600 vph
  • Strap: Black alligator
  • Buckle: Ardillon buckle

Pros

Elegant doesn’t’ even begin to describe this devastatingly dashing watch. Its pristine white gold casing is contrasted so beautifully with its midnight black satin dial and sleek silver-plated hands. With no numerals (nor other details) on sight, the timepiece conforms to the ever-sophisticated minimalist style—a heavy favorite among today’s tastes. Despite its references to the past, however, this watch is 100% contemporary with its self-winding mechanism and high-end quartz Caliber Beta 21 movement.

Cons

Minimalism is arguably stronger in the world of high fashion than haute horology. Although simple timepieces display such outstanding refinement, for others, it may look boring. Now more than ever, the luxury watchmaking business is seeing a surge of maximalist timepieces with as much shimmer, sparkle, and shine one watch can take. Although minimalist watches, like Piaget’s Black Tie Vintage Inspiration timepiece, are still very much embraced, their competition is getting tougher and more cut-throat.
