Buying into a luxury piece is tantamount to purchasing a work of art. The amount of artistry and craftsmanship enthused into a watch these days can rival those working in a couture atelier or an art studio. One just has to see Piaget’s Limelight Gala to understand this. This amazing piece of art and engineering inspired one of the greatest artists of all time Salvador Dali, emphasized that beauty and design alone are worth the title ‘luxury.’

There comes a time in the luxury retail business that a piece stands out because of its artistry. A break-out item can create a flurry of excitement and conversation simply through its sheer beauty and unique design. In fact, the luxury retail industry and the art world have long had a relationship with each other, combining both sensibilities in establishing what is now one of the most lucrative markets today. This relationship is proven by Piaget’s iconic Limelight Gala timepiece.

Release date: January 2013
Price when reviewed: $20,700

The famous model debuted on the scene back in 1973, but forty years later, the Swiss luxury label relaunched it during SIHH 2013, which was held in January of that year. The watch was inspired by and named after Elena Ivanovna Diakonova, surreal artist Salvador Dali’s wife, who went by the name of “Gala.” With its unforgettable features that harken back to Dali’s art, it makes sense that the Limelight Gala is priced at $20,700.

If one wants a show-stopping timepiece to decorate her wrist, Piaget’s Limelight Gala watch is the way to go. The timepiece personifies the Swiss company’s collaborative relationship with surreal artist Salvador Dali, and it shows by how the model is designed itself. A swirl of sparkling diamonds encases the dial in a surreal-like manner, while the gold-plated numerals on its face are reminiscent of the iconic painting, “The Persistence of Memory.” At only 26-millimeters in diameter, the timepiece is also one of Piaget’s most ladylike and sleekest items.

At times, too much character can be a bad thing for a luxury business. This model, while a standout by itself, can be considered a niche item for a particular clientele. It’s possible that not a lot of horology fans and critics will appreciate such an individual piece, especially since classics designs are always in favor in the world of haute horology. With the Limelight Gala, Piaget took a risk by offering such a uniquely-designed piece.
